Splendour in the Grass recap

I just got home from Splendour in the Grass!

… Like 9 days ago (Yes, I know I fail at blogging). But, to be fair, as soon as I returned I contracted a horrible flu.

For those who don’t know, Splendour in the Grass is a Music and Arts festival that goes for a duration of 3 days in Byron Bay, NSW. This was this years lineup. Amazing, huh!?

I went with two of my biffs: G and S. We stayed in an apartment because we missed out on camping tickets. The weather was almost unbearably freezing at times so we were quietly thankful for that. Each day we caught the shuttle bus from town to the fields where the festival was held, making some short-term friends on the way.

My favorite acts of Day 1 were Kate Miller-Heidke, The Shins and Jack White. The quality of the music was superb but I longed to be tossed around in a mosh-pit and day 1 definitely did not deliver on that front. We had a pretty good spot for The Shins, smack-bam in the middle of the crowd but nobody was moving. And I have the lack of bruises to prove it. I looked around at the crowd and everyone was so mellow. Just casually swaying back and forth to this amazing band. The random wofts of marijuana probably explains that.
For a duration of about 15 minutes on day one, it was absolutely pissing down with rain. It was literally coming down in sheets. All traces of grass turned to mud and from then on in, the festival was referred to as: “Splendour in the Mud”.

My mates and I decided to get our pre-drinks on for day 2. This meant that we arrived at the festival late afternoon rather than midday. There were a few clouds in the sky, but overall the weather was fairly nice. Mud and puddles were still very evident. S nearly pulled a sickie due to over-inebriation. G and I found this quite hilarious.
We got mad spots for Jinja Safari and The Beautiful Girls. At the end of Jinja Safari’s set, the keyboardist jumped into the crowd. I got a nice grope of his hair.
S, G and I then decided to chill out and have lunch. Lunch and ciders. Festival food really is delicious.
After lunch we went our separate ways because I wanted to see 360 and nobody else did. So worth it though! He absolutely killed it. On the mosh front, 360 definitely delivered. At the beginning of his set I was about 7 meters away from the stage and by the end of it I was nearly at the front of the mosh pit. So good.
Day 2 came to a close with Bloc Party and late-night-kebabs (that’s not the name of a band, we actually got kebabs on our way back to the apartment).

ImageDay 3 was my favorite day. We arrived fairly inebriated (and managed to sneak in a goon sack in S’s hood). A stand-out band of the day for me were Ball Park Music. I had never heard their stuff before but as soon as the frontman emerged into the mosh-pit mid-song, I fell in love. S and G then went to see another act but I stayed put because one of my favorite band’s were about to play. Fun. were too amazing for words! they definitely live up to their name. Other highlights of the day include Missy Higgins, The Kooks and Electric Guest.

Overall, despite the mud, rain and cold, Spendour in the Grass was a fantastic experience. I definitely got my moneys worth and would consider returning next year. I slept on the flight back and as soon as I got home I bought a bunch of albums and then went straight to bed. It feels as though I’m only kind of waking up now, 9 days later.

Unfortunately my shoes did not survive the weekend.

Moral of the weekend is: If you jump in the mosh, I’m probably going to buy your album.

What I’m listening to

In two or so months time I’ll be attending Splendor In The Grass Music Festival! woohoo!
Then, a few days after that… I’m going to Ed Sheeran! yipee!
Then, a few months after that… I’m going to Coldplay! huzzah!
Then, about a year after that… I’m going to One Direction! … not really though. (I wish I was… LOLJKS… I’m not kidding… I’m kidding about not kidding haha! … or am I?)

Anyways, without further a due, these are the albums I’m currently listening to.

360- Falling and Flying

If you haven’t heard of this dude, he’s an aussie rapper/ hip hop artist. Mmm… I know what you’re thinking. An Australian rapper? really!?. I get it, Australian rap is a contentious issue and maybe I’m biased but I just love authenticity of his voice. I love that you can feel his passion in his voice.
I’m super pumped to see him at SITG.
He’s weirdly attractive despite his neck+hand tattoos plus, behind his hardcore facade I reckon he’s a really gentle guy.
My favorite track is Killer. The song has a boss video clip to go with it, so check it out.

Fun. – Some Nights

It’s been wicked watching Fun. grow these past few years and getting the recognition they deserve. I feel in love with Nate Ruess back in the day he was the frontman for The Format. His voice is so quirky and adorably different that it makes me feel like jelly inside. This album is really… well… for lack of a better word… fun. It’s really lively and mostly upbeat- probably something I’d listen to at the gym.
My favorite track is It Gets Better. It’s a really happy tune that kind of encapsulates what these three legendary guys are about and everything that I love them for.

The Shins- Port of Morrow

The only way I can really describe this album or really any album by The Shins is… totally chillaxed. James Mercer is a god… His voice sounds like it has been refined by a rare, majestical audio filter (in a good way). I find that their albums are kind of hard to get into but gosh, once you are into them, their tracks don’t expire. I’ve been listening to Simple Song and Fall of 82′ on repeat.
The album makes me want to gracefully sway about and hectically head-bang simultaneously.
I would listen to these tracks on the train home from a long day or at my computer, whilst I mindlessly lurk the web.

Kate Miller-Heidke-  Nightflight

This album is very unlike anything I’d usually listen to. Each track is insanely chilling in it’s own way. I feel like when I’m listening to this album I can’t really be doing anything else- that her music requires my full attention which is a pretty amazing thing.
Each individual song tells a powerful story. I kid you not, a feature length film could be made out of any one of these songs.
Massive props to Kate Miller-Heidke on this quirky, intense new album.

My New (Half-of-the)Year Resolutions

New Half of the year Resolutions? Why not wait till Next year?

Well a few reasons actually. I started university this year so I devoted the first half of the year to settling in, finding a job and not really worrying about that whole bettering-myself crap. Also, on account of my inherent ability to put things off, I only thought about purchasing a 2012 diary about a month ago, and by that time all that was left were bloody financial year diaries which don’t start till the 1st of June. So I figure, new diary= new me.

1. (the mandatory) Put more effort into my studies

2. Fix up my sleeping pattern. – Organize my timetable so that class starts in the morning not after midday… afternoons can be spent doing productive things, unlike mornings (which are often spent sleeping). Plus, sleep is for the dead yo

3. Avoid laptopping in bed (damn, its so tempting to laptop in my comfy-ass bed but this lil ol’ habit screws up my sleeping pattern too)

4. Go to the gym more, it’s $70 a month ffs!

5. Put more effort into appearance (this comes with waking up earlier).
…A few weeks ago I randomly felt compelled to attempt winged-liquid eyeliner and by some miracle, it actually worked. Maybe I could make winged eyeliner my thing.

6. Read more.
…I’ve already kind of started doing this. I just started a book called Brida by Paulo Coelho the other day and despite the fact that thus far, the plotline is extremely cringeworthy, it’s a start.

7. Spend less money on coffee… 3 Starbucks a day is a little excessive. Plus, Starbucks coffee isn’t even that good. No, that’s a lie… I’m no coffee connoisseur (as much as I’d like to be) so Starbucks is pretty damn good to me.

8. Get outside more.
…I’m starting to look a little pasty (which is kind of annoying, because now it’s winter in Australia)

9. Attempt some new hobbies/meet new people (gogo dancing or improv classes could be interesting/fun/an experience)

10. Stop being stagnant and start moving forward!
