Digital Storytelling: An Interactive Adventure.

For this task I worked with classmate Dan to produce a choose-your-own-adventure, non-linear youtube video. We were inspired by this blogpost which puts into words a girls struggle when forced to choose between two men: one representing time and the other money. Dan and I reconfigured the storyline, stylising it to have a more comical, satirical feel. We decided that three videos would be produced: one whIch introduces the storyline and then at the end of that video two annotations would appear which link to another video, continuing and concluding the story in the way which the viewer decided.

We filmed and edited the whole thing in one evening and given the time constraints, the outcome was fairly good (if you ignore the fact that my acting skills make Kirsten Stewart look outstanding).

We took note of the various digital stories we had researched, and tried out something new. Neither of us had produced a non-linear YouTube video before.

We both promoted the video on our personal FaceBook pages and on Twitter (using the #netmed hashtag). Internet fame here we come!

My New Youtube Obsession

Some of my favorite things in the world are Comedy, New York City and YouTube. I spend hours at a time watching Vlogs, shorts, trailers, reviews, how-tos, fails and more. Recently, I discovered a web series, created by two female New-Yorkers, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer. It’s called Broad City and it gives an insight into what it’s like to be a single and somewhat dysfunctional female 20-something living in the Big Apple (my dream future).

It’s hilarious.

Unfortunately, the camera work and direction isn’t too flash but I can look past that seeing as the two girls pretty much wrote and produced the series more or less on their own. Plus, it’s super quirky and awkwardly funny.

I give it 7/10.
They haven’t posted an episode for about a year now but they’ve been doing a bit of promo stuff lately so I have a feeling that a revamped new season is in store… I’ll definitely be on the look out for that.

Check it out!

Semester has Begun!

Simultaneously working a part time job and studying a degree means that I never really get a break. Right this instance I feel as though I am not awake nor asleep.

When I finished high school, there were mere weeks between graduation and the commencement of a full-time summer job. This was where I got my first taste of what it felt like to be hungover and at work. That means I’m a woman now, right?!
I tend to forget that I actually do work fairly hard. It’s probably because my current job is so un-fulfilling. Hashtag university pains. Hashtag I’ve got to stop ‘hastagging’ outside twitter.

So this semester I’m studying Networked media, Broadcast media, Authorship and Narrative in Cinema, and Communication Technologies. I’m quite excited.
I’ve also enrolled into studying  a Diploma of Languages on top of my degree. I’m learning Spanish! Actually, this semester is more of a test run kind of thing. It’s something I’ve never really done before so I could possibly hate it but then again if I could speak Spanish… Woah… the mind wanders. I’m getting a travel boner just thinking about it.

So, if all goes well… In three years time I will have a Degree, a Diploma and just enough money to buy a ticket around the world.

1 more week till I head to Byron Bay for Spledour in the Grass!!

A Week in the Life of Me: Day 6- Monday

Today I worked 9-5 (what a way to make a living…

…barely getting by)

Forcing myself out of bed this morning was quite a task. You know when you’re so tired that your eyelids turn inside out? Or maybe that’s just me.

I worked solo for the first time today… it was a bit terrifying. I spent a good 10 minutes this morning trying to figure where the light switch was. Yikes.

Then I came home and consumed some media. Nom nom nom media.

My ‘Week in the Life of Me’ is getting exponentially worse.

That was my Monday.

Obligatory Introductory Post

I’m a self-confessed lurker. That’s right, one of those people who sit at their laptop, browsing sites such as facebook, twitter, youtube, livejournal etc., watching and reading timelines as they automatically update. Now before you conjure up an image in your mind of a middle aged tubby guy with a beard, hunched over at his laptop spilling potato crisp crumbs on his keyboard as he watches his dashboard intently; that’s not me. Rather, I’m an 18 year old girl from Australia, who loves the internet.

…I’m going to stop me right there. I’m trying so hard not to make this sound cliche and cringey but it’s much harder than I thought, so bare with me please.

Okay, so back to being a lurker. Yes, I’m one of those.
“Lurkers don’t create WordPress accounts and write ‘obligatory introductory’ posts, though!”, You may say. Well, right you are. So why am I doing this? Because I don’t want to be a passive lurker anymore; I want to be active.

Another reason I’ve created this blog is because the other day, as I was doing my daily lurk of the web, I yahoo-answer searched ‘how to land an internship’. That’s when it occurred to me that since I do want to land a career in the media industry at some point in my life, I should probably have a place of my own where I can direct future employers. (Hey future-employers, hey!)

What am I doing with my life other than lurking, you ask?
I’m a university student, studying a Bachelor of Communications/ Media. Some classes I’m taking this semester include editing, cinema studies and writing. I also have a part-time job at a cinema, so when I’m not lurking or studying, that’s where I am (you’ll probably hear about my experiences as a ‘cinema worker’ in entries to come).

I’m random, weird and up until today I’ve been a thinker, but from here on in, I’m going to be a do-er. Goodbye lurking and hello vanity!

My name’s Ellyse, by the way.
